Discovery Through Transition
Students with complex intellectual and developmental needs often may require specially designed instruction and or specialized educational programming to support them in attaining skills needed to have meaningful postsecondary training, employment and career opportunities. Without these skills, the transition post high school can be challenging. The discovery process for transition-aged students focuses on the individual’s strengths, talents, support needs, ideal employment conditions and the best environments for success. Rather than depend solely on data collection that often does not reflect the best picture of this population of students, the discovery process uses data that capitalizes on the student’s strengths, needs, preferences and interests. This information is then utilized in planning instruction, learning opportunities, and work preparation that can potentially lend toward developing necessary skills to work in a desired interest area, including Customized or supported employment opportunities.
The Wyoming Department of Education Vision Outreach is working with districts to introduce them to the Discovery Process, providing training in how to implement it into existing programs to better serve students. Participating districts are actively involved in and receiving training through a mix of web-based training, district specific coaching, and access to resources and materials to work to implement the Discovery Process in their districts
